Re: Elephant garlic

It's not uncommon for them to grow at different rates. Just pick them as they mature. This is actually a blessing so you can have a steady harvest instead of having to use it all at once.

Re: White Christmas pole bean

I did a google and came up with 4 places that have them. But make sure they are companies from the "safe from Monsanto" list. Otherwise you aren't getting good seed.

Re: China Standards

I just saw more Chinese garlic in an "organic" store. I pointed them to this article but they didn't seem to really care. Ignorance is bliss.

Re: corn pollen

The silk will change a darker color if successful.
Also, you won't be able to harvest if you weren't successful.

Re: Mel's mix

You know, I may get flamed for this. But I used to use it and have come to the realization that it's not all it is cracked up to be.
For one thing, it is NOT organic. That's a minus right there. Secondly it is expensive. Thirdly, I don't think it is necessary.

China Standards

from author Michael Pollan about the globalization of the organic food industry and its problems. I teach journalism here at Berkeley and I had a student who went to China to look at organic foods grown there. She went to an organic strawberry farm not too far from Beijing and it was clear to her i...

Re: Homemade Fungus Spray

Mamasden, I have used it successfully for fungus. It may work as a bug deterrent also.

Homemade Fungus Spray

Here's a homemade fungus spray I use. It seems quite effective. It involves making a concentrated garlic solution and then adding a small amount of it to 1 pint of water. Garlic solution: * Soak 3 ounces of minced garlic in 2 tablespoons of mineral oil for 24 hours * Strain out the garlic and add 1 ...

Re: Tomato growing contest

Although genetics play a big part in the size of the tomato, the way they are grown also plays a big part. You could grow a golf ball sized beefsteak if you didn't treat it right.

Re: Fertilize?

Lazy, the key to growing success is amending the soil before you plant. Start with good compost and manure in the fall. turn in and let it sit all winter. Amend again with any good organic matter (manure, compost, worm castings etc.). I've used this method most of my life. ALL plants respond well to...

Re: Help !! Green bean plants

I'd bet money it's a large pest.
Bunnies? They love pole beans. Why the yellowing leaves is a mystery. Perhaps if you could post pictures that would help.

Re: Harbor freight

Stay away from them. There's even a disclosure on the manual that says "products used in the greenhouse are known to cause cancer". Plastic is what it is. carcinogenic. Build a real greenhouse with glass. It's cheaper, lasts longer and is much healthier. Stay away from those harbor freight...

Re: Do you fertilize?

There seems to be this idea to feed your plants regularly. But truth is, in my opinion, as long as those nutrients are in the soil, they will take up what they need. Having said that, I do feed when transplanting, and just before fruit set. Nothing more. No 2 week schedule like some people.

Re: Grow a square watermelon

I know they would be more expensive, but I wonder how they would do at my farmer's market.

No special requirements except those grown in other areas.
Lots of heat, tons of water and a long season.

Re: Earthtainers

No No No. Plastic bad, plastic bad. You could make them out of wood I guess. I wish people would not advertise growing vegetables in plastic. Numerous studies prove the plastic is bad, really bad. Our forefather didn't use them neither should we. This is a site about "traditional skills" :...
