Re: Attaching bubble wrap

I agree with Bob. But I have to ask. How are you getting that much condensation in the summer?
Or are you talking about the upcoming winter?
So, you could always use duct tape, or gorilla tape. It is ugly but will attach better.

Re: Baby carrots

They are neither. They are not young carrots, and they are not grown from a seed. They are just run of the mill carrots, cut, machined down to 2" and run through a smoother. Then the waste is fed to pigs and cows. It was the brain child of a farmer named Mike Yurosek, who devised the plan to se...

Re: Optimal temps

If you're considering growing mostly cool season, I suggest you never let it fall below 45-50 and not above 75. Warm season veggies are another story.

Re: Best hot pepper

Are you sure they are getting pollinated? Also, at this stage I usually back off watering too much. They still need it, But I've found it dampens their ability to set fruit specifically on the very hot varieties. Brush them every day to encourage pollination. They should be setting soon.

Re: Gala Apple

Sorry I wasn't clear. I guess it's just a booster to have another one. The more pollen that is being blown around, the better the pollination is. Although Gala is self-pollinating, they do a lot better with a little help. I know, it's a mystery to me too. LOL

Re: Gala Apple

Believe it or not, they are "partial" self pollinators. In other words, You will do good to have one and will increase your yields but they will pollinate on their own.

Re: strawberry runners

I'm assuming the runners have rooted? If not, you may need to force root them where they are and then dig the babies up with roots then transplant. It's much easier than trying to root them from cuttings. Or maybe I'm not understanding. That happens sometimes :D

Re: Stupid question

I agree about being cautious. Call me old fashioned but I would never compost human waste. Just too risky.

Re: Squash bugs & cucumber beetles

Chris, you may have two things going on with the Zuchs. Browning of the leaves could be powdery mildew or environmental stress. The yellowing could be a nitrogen deficiency or squash bugs. It's hard to say without a good picture. But I would certainly use a foliage spray. Also, the garlic or pepper ...

Oregon Heirlooms

A quick note to let everyone know that this will be my last year with Oregon Heirlooms. Tom and I have partnered for many years on this project. Every year I keep saying I am retiring and still keep plugging along. However, this is my final year (I know, I said that last year) and this time it is tr...

Re: ripe eggplant ?

Yes, pick them earlier than later.
You can pick them at any time during this stage. If they wait on the vine too long, they tend to get harder and lose flavor.

Re: best production

It very well could be they are not suited to your climate. Often times a certain variety just will not perform. I've had this issue with many of them. Although with persistence, over time I have been able to get the to respond. Growing heirlooms is an exercise in patience, but in the end is well wor...

Re: Help !! Green bean plants

This is good to know. Thanks.
I have heard of the aspirin cure, but had not seen any concrete successful field testing on it.
This may require a deeper investigation.
Thanks for the info,

Re: Balsa alternative

Paulownia is a great alternative. Easily grown on the west coast. Better than balsa IMHO.
